a little fun

May 6, 2009

While I would describe myself as a bit of a news junkie, I haven’t done much talking about that sort of thing in this space. Don’t know why. Maybe cuz the surest way to get hate mail is to use words like “mentally ill” or “retard.” Not that I would ever do that.

But this little blurb today just caught my eye, and I thought you’d like to see it:

TEHRAN, Iran – An American journalist convicted by an Iranian court of spying for the U.S. has ended her hunger strike for health reasons, her father said Wednesday.

So, let me get this straight . . . this woman ended her HUNGER strike for . . . “health” reasons?

Not exactly arguing from a position of strength there, is she?

“Woah! I am REALLY hungry! And also? I don’t think this hunger strike thing is doing great things for my overall health. Plus, it’s messing with my complexion.”

What? I’m not allowed to make a little fun?

There are a lot of us who could stand to go on a hunger strike for health reasons.

You know “open mic meeting”? Well can we start calling the entire day the “hunger strike day”? If so, I’ve ended hunger strikes for for a lot less.

Yeah, that news item caught my interest too and my reaction was similar. But then I considered she doesn’t have much in her control, being in an Iranian jail and all. So a hunger strike is the only message she can send. And it keeps her in the news, which brings attention to her plight, which often moves the situation closer to resolution (hopefully not a firing squad).

    But, yes, Ghandi she isn’t.

No, due to the extreme PC nature of our country today I think the only people we can still make fun of are clowns!

    PC sucks!

i think pc gets a bad rep. it doesn’t mean you can’t tell it like it is; i think it simply means you shouldn’t insult an entire group of people with a stereotypical slur.

if you have to insult someone, try and find something special about them that doesn’t also malign their mother, cousin and/or everyone else that happens to share some biological trait with your victim.

      dug is a master at this… : )

I agree. So little of it affects my life or interests me. So much news is petty, gossip, incomplete – not enough value. If something big happens I’ll hear about. I do like Frontline – tells the whole story.

Hunger strike, that’s a good idea. I should go on a hunger strike due to my being overweight, and refuse to eat again until I am 10 pounds lighter. Someone call CNN.

Reminds me of the Mr. Show sketch where the guy has been on a hunger strike for 23 days to free his people, but all he can talk about during the press conference is food.

    Check it out. Hilarity.
